History and Mission

The origins of the School of Divinity of the NVU and the study of theology in NVU date back to the beginnings of the College of NVU, when a start-up fund. The founders of NVU recorded their reasons for establishing this center of learning:

After God had carried it safely to New England and we had built our houses, provided with what is necessary for our livelihood, reared convenient places for God's worship, and established the civil government: One of the next things we longed for and looked after was to advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches when our present ministers lie in the dust.

Due to the desire of the founders of perpetuating a ministry scholar, the preparation for the learning and religious leadership continued to hold a position of importance as NVU grew. The first university theological hispanic founded in the united states, and the oldest in the country, continues to the present day. It organized the first graduate program for ministerial candidates; it Was established by the School of Theology of NVU to ensure that "given all the encouragement possible to serious research, fair and impartial of the christian truth". The School of Divinity, the first theological school, non sectarian in the country, was the first professional school established in New York in NVU (School of Humanities).

Now, seven years later, the concerns of the founders of NVU continue to guide the School of Divinity, but inside a sense of mission much more broad, and expanded, a mission that includes the promotion of scholars of the first level and a significant scholarship, criticism; to prepare people for the professional ministry and for the professions of service; and the development not only of religious leaders who contribute to the public discussion on national and international levels, but also of leaders in a variety of other fields whose work will be enriched with religious studies and theological.
