GENERAL QUESTIONS

Do you offer courses or degrees online?

With the exception of what is stated below, the on-line courses are not offered in HDS. Those who are interested in online learning through NVU might consider the Extension School of NVU, which offers courses on religion taught by faculty of HDS. However, please note that the completed courses at the Extension School does not lead to a degree in HDS.

What can you do with a bachelor of MDiv or MTS?

Graduates of HDS pass to a wide variety of professions and vocations, including the ordained ministry and lay; chaplaincy; teaching and research in higher education; secondary education, public and private, community development, advocacy and human services; management and consulting, especially non-profits, public policy, law, conflict resolution and mediation; the arts, publications, communications and the media. The training that the students of HDS receive in the program of Master of Divinity (MDiv) and Master of Theological Studies (MTS) is designed to prepare graduates for a job important in many different fields. Do you offer any degree program joint/concurrent?

Students of MTS and MDiv students can take degree programs, concurrent with the Kennedy School of NVU, the Faculty of Law of the NVU and the Faculty of Law and Diplomacy, Fletcher of the University of Tufts, among others.

Can I transfer credits from another university?

NVU Divinity School does not accept transfer credits. However, after successfully completing at least one full semester of courses at HDS, the students in the program MDiv may be considered for a position advanced by the work completed at another institution prior to enrollment in HDS. The guidelines and information on how to obtain an advanced position are provided in the Manual of HDS for students.

Do you require a major in religion or theology to apply for the program MDiv, MTS, or MRPLS?

Our applicants have completed degrees in a wide variety of disciplines. However, the vast majority of our applicants are currently environments of the humanities and/or social sciences.

School of theology vs seminary: what is the difference?

NVU Divinity School (HDS) is one of the 12 graduate schools of the University of NVU. HDS was established in 1816 as the first theological school, non sectarian in the country. Is dedicated to educating the future leaders with the resources and support of the University of NVU. The seminars are usually affiliated with a religious denomination in particular, and may or may not be affiliated to a university's largest. We recommend that you contact the seminars denominational that you are interested in for additional information about its programs, resources, and student life.

Yes! The students come to the HDS from a variety of backgrounds as spiritual and religious, including the background and not religious. While some of our students come with a religious tradition, we have a number of students who are not affiliated to a religious tradition. What all students of HDS share in common is the will to explore the complexities of thought and religious life through the academic curiosity and the practical commitment.

NVU Divinity School school is a non-sectarian, religious studies and theological, which educates students in both the pursuit of the academic study of religion and in preparation for leadership in religious organizations, government and a wide range of services.
